Mortenson and his NGO Central Asia Institute (CAI) have been committed to building schools in the most remote corners of Pakistan and Afghanistan for the last 16 years. Here he resumes where he left off in his previous book and spotlights the extraordinary efforts to make good on a promise he made in 1999 to villagers of the Wakhan Corridor, a rugged, isolated area of northeastern Afghanistan. The Wakhan is occupied by the Kirghiz, who had been forced out of their land with the coming of the Soviets before returning to restricted migratory patterns, and are cut off from basic, life-sustaining government services. For Mortenson and his well-meaning, multiethnic crew he calls his "Dirty Dozen," the village of Bozai Gumbaz proved to be "the definition of our last-place-first philosophy." By enlisting the help of the local leaders and supplying the Kirghiz with necessary building materials (hauled by yak), the CAI fulfilled one of its main goals: to get the people to build a school on their own.     THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!AHHHHH

    When I was in 7th grade, I read Three Cups Of Tea. I am now in 8th grade and I to this day still participate in Pennies For Peace. Greg mortenson is a life saver and he has brought education and life itself to many children and adults. I am now in the middle of Stones Into Schools and absolutely love it. I tell many of my friends and family about Greg Mortenson. I will continue to cheer him on and give to Pennies For Peace. Thank you so much for all you do for everyone in the world.

    Highly Recommended!!

    I read "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson when it first came out and I was fascinated and deeply touched by his story. His dedication to the cause he is supporting (promoting female literacy in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan) is highly contagious and so, when " Stones into Schools" came out I didn't hesitate in purchasing it and I was not at all dissapointed. It continues the story developed in his first book while at the same time making it very easy to follow if you haven't read "Three Cups of Tea" and refreshing your memory if you have read it. The title might be a little deceiving and unless you pick it up and start reading it you might not grasp the fact that it is not about the physical labor of building the schools but rather about the incredible relationships that Greg Mortenson and his crew have developed with the people from dozens of villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The writing style is simple but engaging enough to make you feel as part of their journey. In a world dominated by conflicts, few have time to look past the media coverage and deep into the hearts of those who,more often than not, are seen as nothing more than "collateral damage" (millions of civilians in Pakistan and Afghanistan). But as Greg Mortenson describes in his book "Stones into Schools", what he and his crew from Central Asia Institute discovered is that these people with their simple lives and limited aspirations have a deep understanding of human relationships and a knowledge of things that is hard to equal. Most of all, they have a suffocating desire to learn and are willing to change their secular traditions in order to help their countries and improve education. This desire and the look on all the children's faces whom he meets in his travels to those regions support Greg Mortenson and his NGO in their school building expeditions. This book is about these wonderful people's lives and it clearly describes how education not only improves the lives of individuals but it gives the insights into the improvement that could be seen in Afghanistan and Pakistan if only these simple people, who suffer as much from extremist groups as those who are in war with them, would be aknowledged more and more time and effort would be dedicated to educating these communities. This is a book that you will not be able to put down and whose touching stories and influx of information you will find exhilarating!

    GReat read but very torn with it

    Read 3 cups of tea and loved it. However while reading this book, I kept having in the back of my mind "is this all real or made up?" The story is emotional, moving, inspiring and empowering as well as educational. But the naggy of the Dateline story on Mr. Mortenson keeps haunting me - I wish he would set the record straight. I also was disappointed to see it listed as one of the biggest hoax boods of the decade along with All the Little Pieces which was very disappointing. Either way the story is wonderful and worth the read and I only hope all the things discussed happened and the hope that has banded with the people and the county is astounding.

    Great resource for global education

    Greg Mortensen's "Stones into Schools" is a really interesting nonfiction read for educators who want to understand what is going on in the middle east besides the war. I never knew that something as amazing as this was happening alongside the war. This book discusses the idea that if the world would decide or choose to educate a girl then we will educate the world. Women take their education and share it with their families, then share it with their village and then it ripples out from there. His quote "promoting peace through schools not bombs" says so much about his mission and his non-profit organizations, Central Asia's Institute's mission.
