Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
The author of this book calls it "flip a word," because words are changed by flipping the pages over. At the bottom of several pages there is a cut-out section through which the letters of a word family can be read. Three different word families are addressed in this book. Eight pages, two sides of four sheets, are used to introduce each word family. Pages three and four have the cut out. Page one introduces "The op family." Page two has a colorful picture of a girl standing on top of a building. The word under the picture is top. Page three shows a policeman. The word below the picture is cop. The c is printed on that page and op appears through the cut- out. On page four the picture is a student safety guard holding a stop sign. Under that, st is printed on the page; and op shows through the cut-out to form the word stop. On page five with no cut out, the picture shows a father and child with the word pop printed at the bottom of the page, and page six shows the father standing on top of a mountain peak with the words pop on top printed underneath. The un and an word families (bun, run, sun, fun and man can, fan, tan) get the same treatment in the remainder of the book, and there is a page at the back reprising all of the words in the book. It is all very clever and fun, possibly a good choice for a children's library, or a kindergarten or early childhood play center, but learning these simple word families is not much of a challenge for most beginning school children, and teachers for the dyslexic do not take this approach.
