Gr 3-5This book is based on many of the same songs featured in The Plays of the Songs of Christmas (Smith & Kraus, 1996). While the earlier collection is best used by a group, this book's straightforward narrative form is better suited for independent readers. "The Twelve Days of Christmas" tells a riotous tale of a princess named Myopia who receives 12 unsolicited and unwanted presents. "Silent Night" recounts the now-familiar tale of Father Mohr and Franz Gruber and how they composed the world's most famous carol on the night in 1818 when the organ broke. And "Jingle Bells" tells of the plight of the Pierponts and a horse that won't move unless he hears the sound of bells. The words to each song are included, but not the music. For storytelling or Christmas read-alouds, this simple collection takes a sound idea and expands upon it.
