Overview

In her memoir entitled Storkbites, Marie Etienne paints a powerful picture of her wealthy Louisiana family - a mother who bounces from sobriety to drunkenness, kindness to vicious cruelty, and an eccentric father who takes bizarre steps to protect his nine children from danger.Storkbites weaves two timelines-one showing a childhood filled with abuse, insanity, and material excess, and the other, the adult trying to make her way in California as a new mom. Murder, suicide, promiscuity, and alcoholism overshadow Mardi Gras balls, Christmas celebrations, and a daughter's bittersweet coming-of-age. Vivid scenes depict Daddy, nightly, tucking his children into bed, and hours later, Momma waking them for a beating. Marie is seduced by her married gynecologist. Pull-the-plug battles emerge as Momma lies dying in ICU. In the midst of a divorce, Marie sees her handprint on her son's back and vows stop the cycle of abuse-both as victim and perpetrator. Filled with hope, Storkbites shows the fierce love between siblings and the determination of one young mother desperate to escape her abusive past.

Looking for something new and readable?

Here's a book for your book club or to read on your own. More thrilling than a spy novel, funnier than a comedy, Storkbites: A Memoir gives you a peek into the secrets of a wealthy Southern family where all is NOT well.

A compelling story of an abusive family and one woman's journey to survive it all

Author Marie Etienne moved me with her first novel Storkbites. I am an avid reader of memoirs and hers I could not put down. She brilliantly blended chapters from past to present and kept my interest. Her book made me laugh, cry and be angry at the life that she and her siblings had to live. I recommend this book highly to everyone to read. I can't wait for the author's next book.

One of the best books I have read!

Storkbites is an honest story about a woman (Marie Etienne) who survives many terrible things throughout her life such as murder, suicide, alcoholism, and an abusive mother. She makes a vow that she will not let her sons go through the same things that she had to go through as a child. I would definately recommend this book to you!

    A must read!

This book is captivating - the way the author flips back and forth from childhood incidents to dysfunction as an adult then ultimately understands how the two connect and relate to how she raises her own children is a true life lesson in how pain can be mended and the nasty family cycle of pain can be ebbed if not halted.
