Children's Literature - Sarah Maury Swan
Talk about an "Extreme Job," how about driving into the path of a tornado to get a closer look? Meteorologists chase tornadoes and hurricanes to study what happens during these storms. That means getting up close and personal, all in an effort to understand these natural phenomena. The more we know, the more we can prepare for these storms. But the job isn't all a thrill a minute. Sometimes storm chasers must wait for hours before a storm gets severe enough to chase. They use lots of technical equipment like computer-driven storm tracking equipment. They even get out of their vehicles to film storms. Storm chasers are trained to track these storms and know a lot about weather, but there are people who track storms as a hobby. These people are called Storm Spotters and they sometimes report to authorities on what they see. This book has a lot of interesting information crammed into a small space and the photographs are great. Sprinkled generously throughout the book are sidebars with extra information. Good addition to a school science library. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
