Overview

A sixteen-year-old stowaway discovers her destiny on Noah’s ark in this riveting reimagining from award-winning author and “master storyteller” (SLJ) Donna Jo Napoli.

The rain starts suddenly, hard and fast. After days of downpour, her family lost, Sebah takes shelter in a tree, eating pine cones and the raw meat of animals that float by. With each passing day, her companion, a boy named Aban, grows weaker. When their tree is struck by lightning, Sebah is tempted just to die in the flames rather than succumb to a slow, watery death. Instead, she and Aban build a raft. What they find on the stormy seas is beyond imagining: a gigantic ark. But Sebah does not know what she’ll find on board, and Aban is too weak to leave their raft.

Themes of family, loss, and ultimately, survival and love make for a timeless story. Donna Jo Napoli has imagined a new protagonist to tell the story of Noah and his ark. As rain batters the earth, Noah, his family, and hordes of animals wait out the storm, ready to carry out their duty of repopulating the planet. Hidden belowdecks…is Sebah.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tina Chan
In the third millennium BC, sixteen-year-old Sebah loses her family and home in a flood. She and Screamer, her kitten, take shelter in a tree while eating the dead animals that float by. She and Aban, a boy she meets, try to survive together. When they see an ark, she and Screamer successfully climb aboard while Aban is too weak and ill to move on the raft they built. On the ark, Sebah sees giraffes, lions, and tigers, among other animals. She names the bonobos Queen and The Male. Afraid of being thrown overboard, she hides in a cage when she hears people approach her deck. She hears the conversations of family members Mother Emzara, Shem, Ham, Leba, Nela, Japheth, and Ada. Nobody can leave the ark until Noah and the Mighty Creator say so. Sebah eats food that is fed to the animals. While letting the animals out of their cage at night, she discovers another stowaway whom she befriends and calls Bash. This is a thrilling account that gives teenage readers a fictional narrative of a biblical story. Also includes a timeline of Genesis verses and a bibliography. Reviewer: Tina Chan; Ages 12 up.

THIS is a good fictionalized story of what COULD have happened. I AM MIDDLE AGED or over middle age -with bible stories under my belt, and is STILL a very good story. NOT preachy.
