Overview

A reader from the bestselling Stablemates series, Stormy features an Appaloosa horse!

Shady Glen Stables is full of friends who love to ride horses, but Becky and Hannah don't like each other at all. Hannah is a know-it-all and her horse, Casey, wins every jumping competition she enters. Becky has no blue ribbons because her horse, Stormy, has trouble jumping certain fences - like the ones with flower boxes.

One day Hannah has an accident and cannot ride! This is Becky's chance to win, if she can help Stormy overcome her fear of fences. Although Hannah offers Becky tons of riding advice, it is hard for Becky to admit that little-miss-perfect may be right.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There is not much new in this story. Two girls are vying to be the best riders and Hannah has won the most blue ribbons on her horse Casey. In the meantime, Becky and Stormy were having some problems. Story just does not want to jump all the fences and if he will not do that then they will never win any ribbons. A big contest is approaching and both girls are practicing, but Hannah has an accident and ends up with her ankle in a cast. As one would expect the two rivals work on becoming friends and Hannah helps Becky and Casey win the next horse show. The pictures easily support the story and are great for any reader who loves horses and all that is related to them. The ending is predictable, but there is a positive message. Bryer Stablemates are the focus in this level 3 "Scholastic Reader." Aimed at kids who are reading for inspiration and information, this title is targeted to grades 1-3, is identified a guided reading level "M" and has a lexile of 520 and a word count of 1489. Children's Literature - Andrea Williams
This addition to the "Stablemates" series is the perfect choice for horse lovers. Becky's show horse Stormy is a reluctant jumper who rarely wins ribbons. In this story, the horse achieves something even more important, helping to mend the relationship between Becky and her sister Hannah. When a riding accident puts Hannah the blue-ribbon rider out of a competition, Becky jumps at the opportunity to win. Hannah passes her time critiquing Becky about the way she is training her horse. Then, Becky finds Hannah in the horse stall crying. She questions her sister and finds that she is saddened to be hurt and away from her American Paint Horse, Casey. The girls share their feelings and find that their bitter attitudes have been a misunderstanding. From then on, the two girls work together to prepare Stormy for the competition. In the course of training the fearful horse to trust its rider, the girls find friendship. Soft color illustrations of the girls and their horses add to the idea that an enemy can be a friend; all it takes is empathy and forgiveness. Reviewer: Andrea Williams
