Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This classic story about a duckling who lives on a boat on the Yangtze River has charmed readers since 1933. When the owner calls for the ducks to come home, Ping, the smallest duck, tries not to be the last up the gangplank--for the last duck counted gets spanked on the back. One evening Ping misses the call to come home and stays out all night. His harrowing adventures the following day send him paddling back, only to be last again. Poor Ping!

    So what if you're last!

Just as in prisons and in the service, the last to report is sometimes swatted. Instead, Ping the duck, not wanting to be last once being late decides to take off. This teaches kids to have a mind of their own when confronting controlling individuals.

    My Ping

Some 40+ years ago I discovered Ping a book where both Author & Illustrator come together to tell this wonderful story. I remember the day I discovered Ping in our schools very small library, a place that I found comfort during a very difficult time in my life. As I began to read, I found in my Ping, a kindered spirit whose circumstances although different, had survival as a common bond. Little Ping drew this reader in as I found myself forgetting the harshness of my world, as I was drawn into his, sharing the adventures, the emotions of this wonderful character. This book played a part in the formation of my love of books, and the ability to lose myself into them. This book is timeless, one that I shared with my children. I hope that Pings story lives on in the hearts of those who discovered this book. It is a wonderful story to introduce to young readers.

Ping! The duck who didn't want a spanking

My 4 year old and I reread this book about once every 2 weeks. It is funny and the illustrations are great. Ping! is a duck who lives on a Chinese river boat ... one day, he misses getting back on the boat, because he doesn't want to be last to go up the gangplank. Adventure ensues. Tangentially, it teaches a good lesson about facing up to consequences - because they are not always as bad as the alternative. We like it.

    A Chinese Classic - A World-Wide Classic!

This book, like the military, teaches a kid not to be last in line or the last to do anything, but it also teaches that this teaching makes no difference if you can explore and learn if all you'll get for it is a 'swat.' I read this book when very young, but when I read it again with my kid, all those memories came back.

People who are late are called 'Ping the Duck'

I have often referred to this book when someone is last to enter a room or post an assignment. Rarely does someone understand my literary reference but my daughters grew up with my favorite children's story and now my grandson will hear me reading it to him as well. I hope he learns the lesson that Ping did that there are worse things in life than taking your 'spank' because it means you are safe with those who love you. My girls always felt safe coming home and taking the heat from mom because they knew it was better than the alternative.

    A true Classic!

This was my favorite book as a child! I too asked for it to be read to me over and over, until I was able to read it on my own! I recommend it for every child!

This is what memories are made of.

I was recently asked what my favorite children's book was, this was the first title to come to mind. I can remember as a child reading and re-reading this book over and over again. It is one of the few books that I can honestly say, as a child who did not liked to read, I would read for enjoyment!

    READ IT AGAIN! AGAIN!!!!!

When I was a kid I would have my dad read this to my brother and I before we would go to bed. Then we would make him read it again... and possibly a third time. =)

    Great Life Lessons

My 4 1/2 year old daughter loved it when we studied it for Kindergarten. It has life lessons such as taking consequences rather than running from them. The illustrations are simple but well done. We read it five days in a row and she didn't want to take it back to the library. Now it will be a birthday present.
