Wonderful means to inspire the telling of life stories.

I have given copies of this book to both of my parents, both in their 80s, with wonderful results, even during a rough time in which my Dad was no longer able to write for himself. My mother would ask him to narrate stories, and she copied those stories into his copy of the book. And then she would write her own stories. This book is totally different from those formulaic books that make huge assumptions about people's lives ('the story of our love...') and allow just a few lines for each item. The questions are very open-ended, offering a guide for themes to touch on, but don't force the narrative in any particular direction. Both my parents jumped around in the book, just filling in those stories that seemed most compelling to them in the moment. I would give this to anyone with a little history behind them who is at a time in their life when they have time to be reflective.

    Leave Something Behind

I love to write in journals. It relaxes me and also helps me get my thoughts together. My husband bought this book for me knowing I would enjoy it..and indeed I did. Yes it can bring up some bad memories but at the same time it can bring up good ones as well. When I have a child I plan on giving it to him/her when he/she gets of age. Its a great way to really let your family know you. Yes..you family knows you but I think this book really gets down to details. I just think it's a great book. Its for some people but not everyone. For those who are interested I would really recommend getting it. If you dont like it..who says you have to keep writing in it or even open it?

    Dad remembers his life

My father is a widdower and grew very lonley after my mothers death. My daughter gave The Story of a Lifetime to him and it sat for a few years unopened. A few years ago dad moved into an independant care retirement facility. He enjoys the social aspects of the facility but since he 85 and has poor hearing he reads a lot instead of watching TV. He had also had a stroke about 15 years ago that makes his writing illedgable. When he finally picked up the book and realized he could not write the stories it got him thinking how much he wanted to remember his life and tell his children all the stories, feelings and thoughts he had never expressed. Dad solved the problem by buying a small tape recorder and simply expressing everything, sometimes tow or three tims that he wanted to tell. My daughter types them up as she gets time. Dad had really enjoyed the book and the memories he had not thought about for so many years. He has even said that he did not realize what a wonderful life he has had until the began to recall all that he had lived and accomplished. This book has served many wonderful uses for both my father and our family. I only wish we had known about it and had given one to my mother as sher loved to write.

    Amazing

I teach courses on how to write your own guided autobiography but not everyone can express their feelings or sentiment with words. This was a wonderful tool for those who just didn't know how, when or where to begin. Once this album is filled, if you so wish, you can elaborate on some of the more important points.

    Great Gift!

This book is a great way to share your life experience. It is an expecially personal way to keep your family history intact in a very prsonal way.

    Ruined my birthday!

This book which I received for my birthday left me totally depressed. It may be appropriate for a 90 yr.old but I wouldn't even chance that! I could not fall asleep until around 4:30am because all my unhappy long ago memories were brought to mind. Some of the questions were just too personal to even allow relatives to read. Many questions will not pertain to your life at all! So much room left for answers! Two questions per page! Seemed the authors just listed question after question and thus you are the author. In a nutshell, I see no advantage to having this book for you nor your family. It will be a reminder of things you wish to forget. This is a book with no redeeming quality, nothing to learn, offers nothing.Don't let it upset you as it did me.
