Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
French's simple yet reverent retelling of the biblical accounts of Jesus' birth is an excellent choice for very young children. The language, easy but never condescending, retains a certain freshness: "A long time ago God called for the angel Gabriel and gave him a very special message to deliver," the story begins. The acrylics star a kindly cast with sweet smiles and shining black-dot eyes; the tone is friendly from cover to cover. Ages 4-up. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Also new to board book, the 1998 The Story of Christmas by Vivian French, illus. by Jane Chapman, provides a peppy prose version of the Nativity, with bright, child-friendly art. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

This retelling with simple brightly colored cartoon-like drawings with people with vertical oval eyes will be understandable to the youngest children. At first Mary was frightened, but the angel told her not to be afraid. When Joseph worried, the angel told him not to worry any more because Mary was carrying God's baby. The couple went to Bethlehem to pay some money to the emperor and found many people. "Mary and Joseph knocked on every door, but the only place left was a stable, where animals were kept." The baby was born. Shepherds heard about it from angels and went to see. Three wise men saw a star and came with presents. In the picture with the innkeeper, Mary has her hands on her large belly. The youngest shepherd leans over the baby as if he were about to tickle his tummy. Parents will enjoy reading this to their young children during the Christmas season. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
