Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Deborah Palgon
This classic tale of magic and majesty will captivate young and old alike. It is the time of King Arthur, a time of dragons and giants, a time when the wizardry of Merlin and others ruled supreme. Age-old themes of loyalty, love and religion abound in this story. The Knights of the Round Table combat until death the treachery of others who attempt to dethrone King Arthur. The story of Lancelot and Guinevere is one of doomed love. In the midst of this tale is the search for the Holy Grail and the quest for religious redemption. Bright and richly colored illustrations aptly depict this medieval tale. This book would make a wonderful gift for any youngster.
Children's Literature
As the book begins, an aged Merlin sits in his cave reminiscing. He begins to tell of his boyhood, before he came into his full magical powers. He continues with the story of how he was summoned to the court of the cruel ruler, Vortigern, then goes on to tell of his magical role in Arthur's conception and the strong promise he exacted for helping Arthur's father get what he wanted. Eventually, as Arthur comes into his powers, Merlin fades into the background. There are the familiar stories of heroic deeds and ignoble betrayals that built and then destroyed Camelot. And after the final battle ends, the Lady of the Lake comes to take Arthur on his last voyage. The book concludes with "Merlin's Farewell" where Merlin talks of his dreams of "Arthur, King of Great Britain and Camelot, who perhaps lives to this day far away in the enchanted land of Avalon." This gracefully written retelling of the familiar stories is published in a handsomely laid-out edition punctuated throughout with many attractive black-and-white illustrations. 2005 (orig. 1987), Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 8 up.
