Meet the Author

John Muir is renowned in the United States as the father of conservation. A friend of presidents and a founder of national parks, he was inspired by a love and a vision of nature as remarkable today as it was in the last century. He is the author of another autobiography, My First Summer in the Sierra, as well as many climbing and conservation essays, including "The Mountains of California," "Our National Parks," and "The Yosemite and Steep Trails." David M. Anderson is a professor of African politics at the African Studies Centre, Oxford University, and a former senior lecturer in African history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He is the coeditor of Africa's Urban Past, Conservation in Africa, The Ecology of Survival, and the Journal of African History.
