Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rosemary Moran
This pictorial journey through four thousand years of Jewish history is, by its very nature and scope, somewhat superficial. Abraham receives five pages of coverage, and Moses eight. Cartoons tell the story, complete with humorous captions and dialogue balloons. The cartoons are contemporary in appearance, reminiscent of Gary Larson's work. The early years, up to 1900 A.D., are covered quite briefly, but more contemporary events receive more lengthy coverage. One entire chapter is devoted to the years 1900-1948, Palestine-America; another chapter covers the Holocaust 1918-1946; and the last chapter covers 1945 to the present, Israel-United States. The index allows readers to look up particular people or events, making the book approachable for readers who only want topics of special interest. Readers wanting a brief and humorous look at Jewish history will be pleased with this book; but to some readers it will pose more questions than it answers. This reviewer wanted more information on several subjects, but it was not Mack's intention to give lots of information in this book-this is an overview of Jewish history, not a complete one. The Story of the Jews should be considered for collections needing a supplement to other titles on Jewish history. Index. Illus. VOYA Codes: 3Q 2P S (Readable without serious defects, For the YA reader with a special interest in the subject, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
School Library Journal
YA-At a near breakneck pace, this graphic-novel-style capitulation of history may be short on explanations but does an extraordinary job of presenting the experiences of the Jewish people in relation to social developments and political exigencies of every era. Humorous line cartoons with the occasional dialogue balloon expressing an "Oy" or an exemplary bit of pilpul carry readers through centuries of Biblical trials, tribulations, and discoveries. Secular Jews may find themselves deeply engaged by this facile journey through a past they haven't been able to reconstruct from traditional world-history courses. Other readers, too, will find a gem or two to nod and smile over. The greatest strength of this text is Mack's ability to humanize the nexus of cultures, whether it is Jews with Syrians, Jews with Greeks, or Jews arriving in the U.S. A supplement to ethnic-studies texts as well as an informative choice for casual readers.-Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA
