Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati
This book is a fairly straightforward rendition of the classic Bible parable about the prodigal son. In the parable a young son takes his substantial family inheritance and squanders it in a distant land. When he hits rock bottom, the son decides to return to his father and ask only to be treated as a mere servant. When the father sees his son, he embraces him and rolls out the red carpet. The father rejoices because his son "was lost but now...is found." Of course, the father represents God, who is all-forgiving. The text is child friendly for the most part, but parents, teachers or caregivers will certainly need to explain words like "Pharisees" and "repentance." Children will enjoy looking at the full-page watercolor illustrations, which really enhance the text. The book is a good choice for religious education instructors of very young children. It teaches about forgiveness and unconditional love.
