Children's LiteratureThis collection of sweet and gentle stories about kittens, puppies, horses, elephants, chimpanzees, and whales are all compiled to create a wonderful read. The text of the stories is written so that it is relatable to young readers that makes is enjoyable yet learning unique facts about each animal. The first three stories are all connected through the same layout, which includes general information about a kitten, puppy, and horse. An additional focus is about the importance of how to take care of these animals when they are pets, such as feeding, grooming, playing, attention, and lots of love. The full color actual pictures compliment the text well. The second set of animals, elephant, chimpanzee, and whale are wild and live in other parts of the world where few people live. The layout of each story is about how a when these animals are babies and how they live from the minute they are born until they are old enough to live on their own without their mother near by and/or other family members. Each story focuses on what each baby does everyday from eating, to playing, to observing and learning, how his/her mother protects him/her from danger, to sleeping. The watercolor illustrations are vivid and lifelike that compliments the text well. The collection of the stories almost seem conflicting based on how the first set describes about the domestic animals could all be pets for humans, yet the second set is about how wild animals live and survive without humans. Overall, a delightful read for those little ones who love animals both big and/or small. 2003, Grosset & Dunlap, Ages 4 to 8.
