Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-A how-to guide that can be used alone by motivated children or by kids working with an adult. Short chapters are grouped in three parts: general background, where and what kinds of stories to tell, and how to learn and perform them. The final section gives advice on forming a club, hosting a party, and putting on a festival. Included are imaginative ideas for creating and adapting stories for particular occasions (a camp-out, babysitting), story games to play at parties or in the car, and ways to use props, puppets, costumes and crafts. Less a detailed, step-by-step manual than an inspirational launching pad, the book focuses on a positive experience, with such advice as ``you learn a story, you don't memorize it.'' However, success may not result from untempered suggestions for incorporating props and crafts. Though they can aid memory, they can also become another thing to keep track of, and making a yarn doll while telling a tale is not easy. Some librarians will cringe at this advice: ``Scary stories will be found in the fiction section of the library under the author's last name,'' followed by a listing that includes Alvin Schwartz, who's in the 398's in most libraries. (There is a later reference to the 398's as a place to find legends.) Given these grains of salt and its homemade look, it is still a useful and unique resource. Teachers, club advisors, and scout leaders will find some good ideas, and librarians can give it to students who listen to a storyteller and say, ``I want to do that.''- Sally Bates Goodroe, Houston Public Library
