VOYA
De Vos, author of the useful Tales, Rumors, and Gossip (Libraries Unlimited, 1996/VOYA October 1996), updates her collection of recommended stories for young adults in this newest edition. Brief synopses of the stories are arranged in themed chapters about the fantastic, laughter, folktales, tales of life, tales of the spirit, and tales of the arts and sciences. A few samples are given in their entirety. Author, theme, and title indexes are included as well as a list of the story collections in which the tales appear. For the purposes of this book, the term young adult refers to teens between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. The strength of this text is that the author has been storytelling with teens for fifteen years, so the recommended stories have the force of being "tried and true" with this age group. Stories also reflect the diversity of many cultures. In addition, useful features can be found, such as a chart with stories behind the days of the week. It will be helpful for the beginning storyteller in choosing material, particularly in the school setting, and for educators who are trying to find popular stories for the teen audience. 2003, Libraries Unlimited, 208p.; Index. Biblio., $35 PLB. Ages 17 to Adult.—Evie Wilson-Lingbloom
