Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-Pellowski, well known for her adult titles such as The Story Vine (Macmillan, 1984) and The World of Storytelling (Wilson, 1990), has created a handbook specifically for young people. She includes background material on young storytellers she has met in classrooms, libraries, and informal settings; a guide to places to tell stories; and a brief, clear introduction to selection and telling. She then provides a collection of stories, grouped by form, that she recommends for inexperienced tellers. The selections feature surprises and plot twists that will appeal to young tellers and audiences. Each includes an introduction and helpful hints on how it might be told effectively. Pellowski's clear prose, excellent story choices, and direct references to young people she has known, as well as the bibliography and notes on good story sources, make this volume an excellent purchase. Small pen-and-ink drawings appear throughout.-Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie
