Overview

These unusual and alluring tales will familiarize children with the stars, constellations, sun, and moon as well as introduce them to the storytelling traditions of the world's ancient cultures. James Riordan has spent many years researching these myths and legends, discovering that, from China to South America, the stars and planets have inspired the earliest storytellers. An Aztec myth tells of a timid goddess who must compete with the vain God of the Snails by jumping into a raging fire to become the sun. The story of the birth of the stars is taken from ancient Inca folklore, while "The Battle of the Northern Lights" is a tale of the Saami people. This marvelous collection is enhanced with the splendid illustrations of Amanda Hall.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 6-A collection of nine stories from different ancient cultures. The title piece (Seneca) is about a star that tells stories for a young traveler to share, both for the pleasure of his hosts and to keep the tales alive. The star gives wise advice: "With some stories you'll remember every word I say, some only part, others you'll forget altogether." With that in mind, readers can move through selections from Inca, Chippewa, Aztec, Maori, Saami, Norse, Greek, and Chinese traditions. The book is beautifully illustrated with colorful full-page paintings, spot art, and borders. Slightly stylized interpretations of traditional ancient drawings work well with the text to create an inviting collection that begs to be told or read aloud. Sources, many of which are out-of-print books, are included.-Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
