Overview

Founded in the early 1950s in Denmark by Karl Emil Knudsen, Storyville Records developed into Europe's prestige jazz and blues label, building an impressive catalog through licensing of vintage sides and arranging recording sessions with American jazz and blues artists who were on tour in Europe. Although this Storyville set by trumpeter Clark Terry has a nice flow to it, it is somewhat of a miscellaneous affair, consisting of three tracks recorded at a 1959 Paris session with fellow Duke Ellington Orchestra alums Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Woode, and Sam Woodyard, two tracks recorded at a club in Copenhagen in 1975 with Ernie Wilkins and Horace Parlan, and tracks from a gig in Atlanta, GA from 1981. Always a versatile player, Terry's ability to play bop while still retaining some swing sensibility is on display here, and the whole sequence feels more unified than it probably has a right to be, given the gaps between recording dates. Highlights include Terry's own "Serenade to a Bus Seat," a version of Thelonious Monk's "Pannonica" from the Paris session, and the ambitious take on Miles Davis' "The Theme" that closes things out. ~ Steve Leggett
