Hippolyte de Bouchard, captain of an Argentinean privateer, sailed the world in search of plunder. In 1818, he turned his attentions to raiding the coast of California. His assault on Monterey and areas south is the setting for this exciting historical fiction tale, seen through the eyes of 11-year-old Carlito. Having seen to the evacuation of Monterey before the pirate attack, Carlito joins his father in the town's defense, only to be witness to his father's death. During a misploted revenge mission, Carlito is captured by the pirates and becomes the cabin boy to the much-feared deBouchard. The camaraderie of the captives, the regimentation of the pirates, and the demanding and dangerous life on shipboard weave a fascinating and somewhat violent story of true events. Each chapter heading is listed in English, with a Spanish translation and Spanish terms are used frequently throughout the book. The author has included an extensive bibliography, glossary of nautical and Spanish terms, and several maps of this voyage.

Gr 5-8-As she has done in several previous historical novels, Gregory brings to life events and perspectives not often found in the standard history texts. In this exciting novel based on the actual exploits of 19th-century pirate captain Hippolyte de Bouchard, 11-year-old Carlito, who lives in the settlement of Monterey, watches his father die at the hands of the pirates and becomes an unwilling stowaway on their ship when he seeks to avenge his death. While some of the dialogue is stilted, especially in emotional scenes, the sharks, the various cruelties of the pirate band, the bloody battles, and the suspenseful tone of the short, cliffhanger chapters will keep most readers involved. Meanwhile, Gregory provides insights into life in Alta California and nicely integrates Spanish words into the text.     california pirates attack Monterey

    I read this book aloud to my CA 4th graders every year. Every chapter has a cliff hanger ending. California geography, history, ocean life,pirates and an exciting adventure all in one novel! What will happen to Carlito? You'll have to read it to find out. I hope scholastic reprints it soon!
