Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This story is the second book in Eleanor Cameron's "Mushroom Planet" tales. The main factor to take into consideration when reading this book is the copyright date, 1956. Due to the book's age, the language and terminology are, at times, quite dated. The other issue with the copyright date is the advances made in technology since the author wrote this story. At the time this was written, space travel was a "dream", not a reality. The story itself is interesting and children will enjoy reading it as long as they understand that it was written a long time ago. The characters are intriguing and easy to identify with and the description is superb. The main characters, David and Chuck, are young boys who have been miraculously included in the lives of two little men who happen to be from another planet, the Mushroom Planet. They have previously traveled to the Mushroom Planet with one of the men, Mr. Tyco Bass. They meet Mr. Bass's cousin, Theodosius Bass, and begin an adventure with him to revisit the Mushroom Planet. However, trouble begins when a would-be scientist, Horatio Peabody, stows away on the spaceship. He is overwhelmed with the beauty and riches that are to be found on the Mushroom Planet. The people of the Mushroom Planet welcome the boys and Mr. Bass with open arms, but are suspicious of Mr. Peabody. The boys help the leader of the Mushroom People locate their lost wise men and rediscover their long-lost friend, Mr. Tyco Bass. The boys return to Earth with Mr. Peabody and vow to keep their space travel a secret to protect the little people living on the Mushroom Planet. 2002 (orig. 1956), Little, Brown and Company,
