Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
When Maya and Tucker arrive at the museum for the second day of spring break, both are tired. Tucker's concern for his new friend, Liam, prevented him from sleeping, but practical Maya stayed up late to research the Titanic and pack a bag for her second attempt at time travel. With their powers of deduction, they realize that the item they choose from the Special Collections box plays a role in which part of the saga they will encounter when they go back a century in time. They avoid the life jacket in hopes of returning earlier in the timeline of events so they can find Liam and save him from the impending shipwreck. Once onboard the Titanic, the children face numerous obstacles and the discomfort of discrimination, as everyone perceives them to be third class passengers and therefore not welcome in most areas of the ship. The friendliness of a crewman saves them from the anger of the captain and outrage of Liam's father, who labels them as stowaways, but nothing can save them from the iceberg. The second book in the "Return to Titanic" series maintains the fast pace and urgency of the first book, with new historical details as a result of Maya's studies. Readers get a first-hand look at both the beauty of the ship's features, such as the elaborate staircase and indoor pool, and the class system that doomed many to death, trapped below decks. Brezenoff weaves together the environment, the cast of characters, historical facts, and an engaging premise to deliver a tightly told episode that leads readers quickly between past and present without a break in the action. "Stowaways" picks up where Book #1 in the Return to Ti

"Stowaways" picks up where Book #1 in the Return to Titanic series left off... the 2nd day of Spring Break. All Maya and Tucker want to do is get the chance to visit the Titanic again.

The author is doing such a good job with this series by showcasing some of the important historical figures concerning the Titanic's story. I enjoyed how Book #2 shows young readers how large the ship really was, by telling of Maya and Tucker's adventure on board. It also accurately captures the essence of 1912 finery and fashion, and then comparing it to how the 3rd-class passengers were poorly treated and restricted.

Overall, a very cool book that kids will enjoy learning from (whether they realize it or not!)
