Born in England and raised in Kenya, Beryl Markham was a notorious beauty. She trained race horses and had scandalous affairs, but she is most remembered for being a pioneering aviatrix. She became the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean and the first person to make it from London to New York nonstop. In Mary S. Lovell’s definitive biography, Beryl takes on new life—vividly portrayed by a master biographer whose knowledge of her subject is unparalleled.

Lovell DID do a lot of research for this book. However, it seems that she used every scrap of notes in the book, much of the time using quotes. She needed a good editor. Usually with a book such as this, the author will be impartial. She was not, and showed this in her opinion the her subject authored books herself and was unjustly accused of having a ghost writer. Let the reader decide. Or better yet, don't read this book.

Wanted to learn more about this remarkable woman

Ms Lovell did a great job telling the whole story, separating the myths from legend from rumour.By having access to her files and pictures and her close friends and some not so close, she uncovered all the bits and pieces that made Beryl Markham who she was,the good the bad and the ugly. All in all she created an amazing book that covers her amazing life from birth to her unfortunate death in the hospital. This book fills in the bits that Beryls book "West With The Night" did not.And because this book was so well researched you could jump right into it after reading Beryls book and not miss a step or vice versa. A great, great read.

I really got a feel for what she was really like. This book is well written and has astory feel to it and dosnt get bogged down and dreary like a lot ofbios are apt to do. Just woderfull
