Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7-12-- Written in an easy conversational style by a child psychiatrist and a young adult author, this book dispenses practical advice in a self-affirming manner that offers much food for thought. The content tackles broad areas that have had whole volumes dedicated to them, and the authors have done an admirable job of succinctly combining the essentials without skimping on suggestions for coping/self-correcting behavior and for getting help. A liberal and effective use of case studies illustrates the topic at hand. This book's strength lies not in the unique nature of its information, which may be found in more detail and with different emphasis in Herma Silverstein's Teenage Depression (Watts, 1990), Sol Gordon's When Living Hurts (UAHC, 1985), and Ellen Kalberg Van Wie's Teenage Stress (Messner, 1988), but in its very readable encouragement to and action resources for teens aware of problems in their own lives or in those of others. An assuring, reaffirming guide that presents realistic options and support mechanisms. --Celia A. Huffman, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland
