Overview

Greek myth and forbidden romance meet in this exciting new urban fantasy.

Brooding, leather jacket-wearing Nyx Fortuna looks like a 20-something, and has for centuries now. As the son of the forgotten fourth Fate, Lady Fortuna, he has been hunted his entire life by the three Sisters of Fate that murdered his mother.

Fed up and out for revenge, Nyx comes to Minneapolis following a tip that his aunts have set up a business there. His goal to bring down his mother's killers and retrieve the thread of fate that has trapped him in the body of a twenty year old unable to age or die.

But when a chance meeting with the mysterious, dangerous and very mortal Elizabeth Abernathy throws off his plans, he must reconcile his humanity and his immortality.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In an alternate present where descendants of the Greek gods have set up magical collectives called “houses,” centuries-old Nyx Fortuna, son of Lady Fortuna, loses the thread of fate that controls his life. He comes to Minneapolis with two goals: to make his aunts, the three Fates, pay for his mother’s death, and to find and cut his life thread. He goes undercover as a receptionist at his aunts’ company and gathers power by seeking out his mother’s lost charms, but his plans are disrupted by a growing closeness with his cousin, Naomi Polydoros, and by beautiful, mysterious Elizabeth Abernathy. Soon Nyx finds himself wanting more than revenge and a quick death. YA author Perez (Dead Is the New Black) kicks off this urban fantasy series with an uneven story in which an intriguing protagonist, snappy dialogue, and a fast-paced plot are undermined by sloppy, clichéd characterizations and a paint-by-numbers romantic subplot. Library Journal
Nyx Fortuna, a brooding, leather-jacketed young man, has finally tracked down his mother’s killers to Minneapolis, and he is determined to avenge her death. As the forbidden son of Fortuna, the fourth Fate, however, Nyx is much older than he seems and his enemies are none other than his aunts, the Three Fates. A chance encounter with a mysterious young woman named Elizabeth Abernathy signals a new direction in his search for vengeance—and for control of the missing thread of his life, the loss of which has trapped him forever as an ageless, deathless youth.

Verdict The author of the “Dead Is” series (Dead Is the New Black; Dead Is a State of Mind) launches a new series featuring a young man caught between his human desires and his boredom with his immortality. The Midwestern setting is a welcome departure from the usual metropolitan backdrop and should result in regional as well as genre interest. Nyx is a likable hero and provides a refreshing change from the usual urban fantasy fare.—Jackie Cassada, formerly with Asheville Buncombe Lib. Syst., NC

Strange Fates 3 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 6 reviews.

Didn't like the double spacing with only 266 pages. Too expensive for what you get. Plus the main character was supposed to be immortal only to a certain degree. It was confusing since he mostly made very human-like decisions. Mistakes. He always seemed uncertain about what he should do in different situations. What a weak and sad immortal. I wish I could get my money back.

I really enjoyed Strange Fates. Nyx was a complex and compelling protagonist, and there were so many plot twists I couldn't put it down!
