Overview

LIEUTENANT EVE DALLAS EXPLORES THE HIDDEN CONNECTIONS AMONG RIENDS AND LOVERS, ENEMIES AND STRANGERS

Technology may be different in 2060 New York, yet the city is still a place of many cultures and giant divides. And as ever, some murders receive more attention than others, especially those in which the victim is a prominent businessman, found in his Park Avenue apartment, tied to the bed—and strangled—with cords of black velvet.

It doesn't surprise Lieutenant Eve Dallas that Thomas Anders's scandalous death is a source of titillation and speculation for the public—and humiliation for his family. While everyone else in the city is talking about it, those close to Anders arem't so anxious to do so. Fortunately, because Dallas's billionaire husband, Roarke, happens to own the prime real estate where Anders's sporting-goods firm was headquartered, she has some help with access.

But the facts don't add up. Physical evidence suggests that the victim didn't struggle. The security breach in the highly fortified apartment indicates that the killer was someone close to Anders, but everyone's alibi checks out, from the wife who was off in the tropics to the loving nephew who stands to inherit millions. Was this a crime of passion—or a carefully planned execution?

"Nora Roberts is cool." —Stephen King

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Thomas Anders's murder was a tabloid monger's dream. When the billionaire mogul is found dead, tied to his bed with black velvet cords, the messy Park Avenue strangling becomes the tawdry talk of the town. For Anders's tight-lipped associates, however, this kinky crime is best left unsolved -- and undiscussed. To loosen tongues, Lieutenant Eve Dallas needs superhuman persistence and occasionally the help of her well-heeled husband, Roarke. What emerges will surprise even devoted fans of Nora Roberts/J. D. Robb's In Death series.
Publishers Weekly

In bestseller Robb's slick 26th not-so-near-future crime thriller to feature Lt. Eve Dallas (after 2007's Creation in Death), the New York City homicide cop investigates the murder of business tycoon Thomas Anders, whose strangled body is discovered tied to his bed, apparently the victim of a kinky sex encounter gone bad. Aided by her mysterious husband, Roarke, and long-time sidekick Det. Delia Peabody, Eve doggedly questions Anders's widow, Ava, and his nephew, Benedict Forrest, number two at the victim's corporation, Anders Worldwide. Both Ava and Benedict have alibis that put them far from the crime scene at the time of Anders's death. While the guilty party soon becomes obvious and the gimmick used by the culprit clear to anyone familiar with Strangers on a Train, Robb's strong, hard-nosed heroine once again generates the kind of heat that keeps fans turning the pages. Meet the Author

Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts
One of the most prolific and popular writers in the world, Nora Roberts (who also writes as her edgier alter-ego J. D. Robb) publishes multiple books a year. Not that it’s enough for her fans, who tear through her unconventional romances. With her trademark mix of fantasy, mystery, and romance, Roberts has created her own genre -- and romance fans are grateful for it!

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

    highly recommend

I have loved everybook in this series. I like it because it's set in the future so not like cookie cutter crime novels. I just wish she would lay off being so graphic about her childhood abuse. I got it the first 8 books it's time to touch on it but not be so detailed. Other than that, fast paced and fun futuristic tech toys.

    Great Read!

I love all of the "In Death" Series and this one is no different. What makes these books so great, I think, is the fact that you have a relationship between Eve and Roarke that is already developed and growing so you don't have to start over, like with many other books. They are suspenseful, thrilling and even have some futuristic technology that would interest every reader! Not to mention the great love story between Roarke and Eve. Read them all!!!

the whole series is a winner

Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb has a winning series here. Eve Dallas is the Homicide detective of the future and Roarke is her exciting sexy spouse. The mysteries keep you guessing to the end and romance is steamy while still sweet. The characters keep things interesting. I enjoy the images Ms Roberts gives us of her idea of the future. The imagery is clear, makes me, as the reader believe its really there while I'm reading the story. Even with all the extras, the murder mystery remains the main focus. She always throws in exciting twists that really keeps you on your toes. Sometimes Eve "just knows" who the killer is, but doesn't know how to prove it, and sometimes she struggles with the outcome until the very end. Either way, If you like mysteries, this series is going to keep your attention. The books can be read in order but don't need to be to be understood. Each book, while it may refer to things that happen in previous books, will stand alone.

    Strangers in Death

This is the usual JD Robb mystery. Nora Roberts really knows how to keep you in suspence. I did miss some of the other characters that are in her previous books. But I always like these stories. Can't wait until the next one.

    Still Good

This one was good. It was well-written, the mystery was good, but the who-done-it has been done before which made it a little easy to figure out what had happened. Overall it's not up to normal standards but it was still enjoyable.

    Jennifer Wardrip - Personal Read

This is my all-time favorite series, but STRANGERS IN DEATH wasn't my favorite book. Although the mystery is interesting, as always, there wasn't much character development, and most of my favorite characters (Mavis, Summerset, McNab, etc.) are rarely mentioned.

Overall, you won't want to miss this installment if you're a fan of the series, but this isn't the best place for a newcomer to begin reading.

    Wow! She's Back

The last couple of books in the series was just not on par -- no investigation, no real interplay between Dallas and the secondary characters. This book brought back the magic of Dallas & Roarke. We got to see a little more of Charles and Louise and some of the others.

    Really interesting

I really liked this book. I really liked the first books in the series but lately they've been tired and old. I didn't bother reading the last one. However, I picked this one up, and I'm glad I did. The story line was interesting- I'm glad she presented the suspect and then we followed the case knowing who the killer was, instead of trying to toy us along. The story line was interesting and fresh- although some of the lines get old- she stood alone with death - but otherwise, a good and engaging read.

i brought this book the day it cam out and was totally hooked....i really like how this book went along. it wasn't overly emotional and dramtic but had enough to keep you reading. i definately could not put it down because the action and suspence was amazing...there is also a focus on other characters which was fun to read as well...i really cant wait to find out what happens to the characetrs from here on because the readers will be delighted with some new situations. All the characters are fun to follow along and the chemistry between each couple is perfect...i also like how the book connects to the past ones...i wish though that the author would put more stuff that happens in Eve and Roarke's personal life because without it the book does not seem real. I perticularly love how the book ended for once. All in all, i would definately suggest this to any in death series/nora robert fan!...trust me, ive read over 70 of her books!

I loved it! It's one of my favorite in the series.

The series is outstanding and this one did not disappoint. I've already read it several times. I love all of the characters and how they interact. All of the major characters throughout the series were part of this book and brought me both smiles and laugher. There was not the intensity of a serial killer threatening the next victim, but solid police work. I even love the reference to Magdelena since you do not forget when someone tries to break up your marriage--the reference make Roarke amd Eve's relationship even more solid. A great read!!!

I loved reading this story because it was light and not heavy like some of the other 'Death' stories for a change. It really made me laugh, Feeney's way of dealing with a cold was so funny. I really enjoyed it.

in true J.D. Robb fashion the book is well written with a some good twists and turns. Yet it really was lacking some 'flare'. Readers have come to love the action, drama and humor of not just Eve and Roake but the whole cast of characters. While we get lots of Eve and Roake we only see glimpes of some of my fav (Mavis, Leo, Feeney, Mcnab etc). This day in the life was a little drab. Maybe after the last 2 book which were intense and I loved, a break was necessary. Look forward to the next.
