    Practical and insightful guide to creating systemic innovation

    Snyder and Duarte have successfully intertwined story with practical guidelines to illustrate how a global company with a track record of success changed its culture to achieve even greater accomplishments. The book is both a wonderful read as well as a template for action. The most impressive thing about Whirlpool's story and also my biggest lesson learned from the book is that Whirpool had to invent its own process for embedding innovation as a core competency. Nothing that was done before regarding innovation seemed to fit what they needed, so they created their own strategy. The reader is left with a wealth of practical guidelines, but also an inspiration to be as original as possible and to fit your strategy to the context of your organization. Numerous other lessons learned are offered, including the need for top management to devote time, invovlement,and passion to the process; the effectiveness of communicating visually as well as verbally to large groups of people (as in the use of a pictorial model of innovation); and the phenomenon of changing a culture through taking action, instead of waiting to take action until a culture changes. Finally, both staff and line functions and processes were blended together so seamlessly in order to achieve success; culture change, reporting systems, financial measurments, etc., were all brought into alignment. Anyone invovled in innovation in organizations - technical specialists, managers, leaders, and change consultants, would benefit tremendously from this incredibly well-written book. In fact, this book offers more than lessons on innovation; it offers fresh principles on change management, communications and leadership that are supported by experience, the courage to take risks and the spirit to journey successfully into the unknown.

    Road Contruction Ahead!

    Duarte and Snyder have devlivered a very clear picture of an ambiguous topic. The authors' share their journey as it happened, all detours and bumps included! This book moves past theory, and gives us a front row seat to innovation at Whirlpool.
