Strategies of the Great Baseball Managers

Strategies of the Great Baseball Managers

by Hank Nuwer, Maury Solomon

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up Biographical sketches of 12 prominent baseball managers whose strategies, techniques, and personalities dramatically influenced the complexion of professional baseball. A complete bibliography of sources indicates the extent of Nuwer's research. A witty and entertaining style reflects the colorful personalities. Quotes such as, ``It's what you learn after you know it all that counts,'' by Earl Weaver dot the text. Six pages of average quality black-and-white photographs of the managers are inserted in the center of the book. This insert does not have the impact that the same photographs would have had if included with the appropriate chapter. The sketches are presented in chronological order, beginning with Cap Anson and ending with Whitey Herzog. The book will appeal to anyone with an interest in baseball. Harvey Frommer's Baseball's Greatest Managers (Watts, 1985) has similar information but a more general focus. Janice C. Hayes, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro
