When the falcon has flown, the mountain lion will charge from the east, and all Byzantium will quake. Only one man can save the empire . . . the Haga!

1046 AD. The Byzantine Empire teeters on full-blown war with the Seljuk Sultanate. In the borderlands of Eastern Anatolia, a land riven with bloodshed and doubt, young Apion's life is shattered in one swift and brutal Seljuk night raid. Only the benevolence of Mansur, a Seljuk farmer, offers him a second chance of happiness.

Yet a hunger for revenge burns in Apion's soul, and he is drawn down a dark path that leads him right into the heart of a conflict that will echo through the ages.

Meet the Author

I'm a Scottish writer, addicted to reading and writing historical fiction. My love of history was piqued during spells living and working close to both Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, sites of rich history winding back through thousands of years. The later Roman Empire and Byzantium hold a particular fascination for me. There is something quite special about the metamorphosis from late antiquity into the 'dark ages' and the medieval period. While historical fiction is my passion, I enjoy writing comedy and sci-fi too. Perhaps one day I'll find a way to combine all three. Anyway, happy reading! www.gordondoherty.co.uk

STRATEGOS - BORN IN THE BORDERLANDS 4.7 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 3 reviews.

This book is hard to review because the author did not live up to his writing potential. He is talented, and I predict he will give readers the full measure of his talent in future novels. In the present book, the final chapters were wonderful because the author showed the purpose of the book, and he developed his characters. Why four stars? The author wrote about a time and place that have not garnered much attention, not even in history texts. The borders, races and tribes of parts of Asia and Europe were caught in a miasma of movement. It took courage to write about a place and time that had no great force able to forge some stability for the people of the borderlands. The read was quick, and despite my criticisms, it was an easy read. I have the next book in the series and plan to start it now. I have griown rather fond of Superman Apion.

5 stars are not enough for this wonderful book Strategos . Apion is a very troubled youth due to what he dae happen to his parents. Many twists and turns to keep a person reading and wanting more. Read this book twice and picked up more on the second reading well worth it.Now hurry up with the second book I can hardly wait. What is late spring for the new book?

In a nutshell, 'Strategos' is a thrilling read. I found it really well-woven, with characters who kept drawing me into the plot as it unfolded. The story winds through a period of the Byzantine Empire where you get the sense that something really bad is coming from the east and the Seljuks and this just kept me turning the pages in eager anticipation. Bravo! I can't wait for the next part!
