Strauss: Four Last Songs, Songs with Orchestra, Rosenkavalier Suite

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
This recording was made in 1995, before Ren?e Fleming had established herself as "America's Diva." If one is curious to know how she ascended to the operatic firmament so quickly, this fabulous all-Strauss program offers a clue, for here is Fleming's voice in the creamy richness and luster of its youthful maturity. And while some of her recent performances have found her veering slightly toward preciousness, these are utterly unaffected yet also deeply responsive to both music and text. Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
This recording was made in 1995, before Renée Fleming had established herself as "America's Diva." If one is curious to know how she ascended to the operatic firmament so quickly, this fabulous all-Strauss program offers a clue, for here is Fleming's voice in the creamy richness and luster of its youthful maturity. And while some of her recent performances have found her veering slightly toward preciousness, these are utterly unaffected yet also deeply responsive to both music and text. Indeed, one of Fleming's strong suits is her thoughtfulness, and this is demonstrated clearly in the way she caresses the final phrases of "September," for example, the second of the gloriously elegiac Four Last Songs. Conductor Christoph Eschenbach also deserves credit for his supremely sensitive shaping of the orchestral part. This was the first of Fleming and Eschenbach's recorded collaborations, and the naturalness of their rapport is palpable from the very first phrase. In addition to the Four Last Songs, five of Strauss' best-known songs are included -- "Befreit," "Muttertändelei," "Wiegenlied," "Waldseligkeit," and "Cäcilie" -- plus a rollicking account of the orchestral suite from Der Rosenkavalier. Vividly recorded in Houston's Jones Hall, this 24-bit remastering yields even more sumptuous sound.
