Stravinsky Conducts Le Sacre du Printemps

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
To celebrate the centennial of the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ground-breaking ballet, "Le Sacre du printemps," Sony reissued several historic recordings in 2013, perhaps most notably the performances the composer conducted with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York later the New York Philharmonic in 1940, and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in 1960. This deluxe package presents those analog recordings in digital remasterings, along with the suite from "The Firebird," which Stravinsky recorded in 1967 with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. This deluxe package presents those analog recordings in digital remasterings, along with the suite from "The Firebird," which Stravinsky recorded in 1967 with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. The hardcover book that houses the two CDs gives track listings and Stravinsky's original jacket notes for the 1961 LP release, in English, German, and French. This essay, along with a few photographs of the recording sessions, is rather slim material for the thickness of the package, and anyone who already possesses Sony's "Le Sacre du printemps" box set, released earlier in 2013 which offers both of Stravinsky's Columbia recordings, along with reissues of legendary performances by Leopold Stokowski, Pierre Monteux, Eugene Ormandy, Seiji Ozawa, Pierre Boulez, Leonard Bernstein, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Michael Tilson Thomas, already owns everything this glorified twofer has to offer. Still, this is an affordable presentation of two essential recordings that belong in any serious collection.
