Stravinsky: Piano Music

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
Think of Igor Stravinsky, and the massive orchestral canvases of ballets like The Firebird and The Rite of Spring probably come to mind first. But the piano played an important role in his work too -- recall the big solo part in Petrushka and the percussive, four-keyboard assault in Les Noces. Fittingly, Stravinsky's most familiar music for solo piano is the Three Movements from Petrushka, arranged by the composer for the incomparable powers of Arthur Rubinstein, and one of the most cruelly challenging pieces in the entire keyboard repertory.
Peter Hill's performance here may not have the absolute assurance of Maurizio Pollini's classic recording, but he dazzles nonetheless. Nothing in Stravinsky's output could be further removed from this than Les cinq doigts, a suite intended for children in which the five fingers play without even changing position: It's a beginner's primer in modernism. In the Piano Rag Music, Stravinsky impersonates a player piano on a mad rampage, while the more subdued Tango gives an idiosyncratic spin to another popular dance form. The two other major works here, the Sonata and the Serenade, are significant neo-classical statements, while the brief Chorale is a true rarity -- the original version of what would later become the finale from the Symphonies of Wind Instruments. Following up his excellent recording of the piano music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern another bargain from Naxos, as well as an imposing Messiaen cycle, Hill turns in a set of performances notable for their clarity, energy, and above all, a profound understanding of the 20th-century piano.
