I normally read mystery novels and only chose this one was free. What a pleasant suprise. I could not put the book down. Characters are so real you feel like you know them. The messages in this book are challenging. This is one of the best books I have read in years. This one is a step up to the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird". A definite must read!

Usually people outside the church only hear about the political "social" issues the evangelicals desire. This book was not only a great read but it gave some clear examples of people who live in the presence of God and how exactly they go about that living. It really is one of the best books I've ever read -- "Christian" or secular! The author did a great job of character development and his characters were quite different from one another and had great depth.

A great story, but more importantly a wonderful message of God's love and the plan of salvation.

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. I hated to stop for anything and read too late every night because I couldn't get to a point where I wanted to stop. You should seriously read this book.

Excellent on characterization and the breaking down of racial barriers.

In reading this book, one must keep in mind the era in which it takes place. The author does an excellent job of quickly taking the reader through decades of a very troubled time in the U.S. as it dealt with the race issue and special needs children. What life was like for African Americans and their interaction with the White culture is handled in a very sensitive, non-patronizing way. Derkacht's characters are real. The development of the storyline kept me interested. I found myself quite drawn into the story.

Devolves into semi-crazy religious imagery. The author has a talent for character building, but about halfway through the (very long) story the main characters are lost in the preaching. Sadly, I was unable to finish it. If you believe that the only true angels are those that give God the credit for their work, you'll probably enjoy it. If you believe that great character comes in many forms, not all of them Christian, it might not be the book for you.

Really got me interested. Just the prologue was a little slow. I'm glad I went a bit further.

I was completely drawn in this tale from the beginning. Through the lives of the residents of Flowers Avenue, Derkacht beautifully proclaims how love, faith and forgiveness can drive away hate and bring neighbors together. Although this story is of a perid in our history, it's message is true and timely today.

I don't write reviews often, but do read often. I read this years ago, it is still with me, so much so that when I saw the title I was compelled to give it a rating.
