Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
This is a comfortable book to read, and I loved the font choices. The voice is calming and reassuring, even if the subject is stressful. We are always reacting to things in our lives and our bodies are trying to obtain stability through the changes. This book clearly explains that. Experimental design is elegantly described. The research of Hans Selye and his rats exposed to two different situations was so beautifully explained that I wanted to do a happy dance as I read it. The problems of stress before birth and in early life can last a lifetime and in our world stress is a common denominator. Because stress can lead to many other problems, such as heart attacks, ulcers, strokes, diabetes and immune system suppression, everyone should know to cope and control stress. Fantastic mini beginner lessons are given for techniques to control and reduce stress. Because what you think about has an effect on stress, "you have control only over how you cope with the situation" (page 74) and this is a fact we all need to learn. With the ease of reading and the importance of the message, this book should be available to all young adults in classrooms and libraries. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell

Gr 7-10- Beginning with a brief history of stress from the time it was first identified, Hyde and Forsyth detail its effects on a young person's brain, heart, and immune system. While this sounds dry and relatively uninteresting, the writing is clear and informative. Interspersed with personal vignettes, the factual information is well organized and presented in small increments. One chapter focuses on various forms of meditation, and another offers a variety of self-help stress-reduction techniques. Black-and-white photographs appear every few pages, primarily breaking up the text. A solid resource for general information and for reports.-Wendy Smith-D'Arezzo, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD

Meet the Author

Margaret O. Hyde, a former teacher, is a well-known author of science and social studies books for young people. She has written or cowritten more than ninety books, many of which have received wide acclaim.

Elizabeth H. Forsyth, M.D., has collaborated with Margaret O. Hyde on more than twenty books. A graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, Forsyth is a child psychiatrist and has been in private practice. She was a consultant to the Burlington, Vermont, public school system and clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Vermont School of Medicine. She lives in Arizona with her husband, Ben R. Forsyth, M.D.
