Teens often struggle to balance their own desires with the demands placed upon them by parents and others in positions of authority over them, including teachers, coaches, and employers. They may face internal pressures from the urge to achieve independence and external pressures from their peers. Puberty's hormones can bring confusing emotional and physical changes. Furthermore, in today's fast-paced world, many may find that every minute of the day is filled with constant activity. All this can lead to significant amounts of stress. Some stress is good, and most stress is only temporary; but when stress becomes chronic, it can lead to mental and physical consequences that are unhealthy.

Stress Information for Teens describes the difference between good stress (sometimes called eustress) and the kinds of stress that can lead to symptoms such as impaired concentration, appetite changes, headaches, insomnia, gastrointestinal problems, depression, anger, anxiety, and other physical and mental concerns. The most common causes of stress in teens are described, and facts are provided about a broad variety of techniques that can be used for stress management, including nutrition, exercise, journaling, breathing techniques, and massage therapy. The book concludes with a directory of stress and stress management resources and suggestions for additional reading.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Marilyn Brien
This toolkit for coping with stress discusses the causes of stress, the effects of stress on the body and mind, and managing stress while including specific problems at school and with family or peer relationships. Distinguishing positive and negative effects of stress is helpful. Techniques for managing stress include controlling anger, engaging in mind-body therapies, and building self-esteem. One chapter offers helpful advice on adjusting to change in stepfamilies. The weakest section deals with the stresses of sex. Students with problems of sexual identity will find no assistance in this book. It does not mention GLBTQ issues. Heterosexual students will find a simplistic approach as exemplified by the statement included in a list of sparsely heard facts about sex: "Condoms will lower your chances of getting pregnant or getting an STD such as HIV, but they do not protect you from all STDs." Peer pressure to have sex is discussed, but the connection between normal adolescent sexual urges and hormonal development is ignored. The book lists many Web sites for more information to help students with problems involving stress. This reviewer is somewhat ambivalent about its value in a library for youth. Other options that cover this important topic include Stress Relief: The Ultimate Teen Guide (Scarecrow Press, 2002/VOYA April 2003) and Too Stressed to Think (Free Spirit, 2005/VOYA June 2006). Understanding what stress is, what causes it, how the body and the mind are impacted by it, and what teens can do are the general categories addressed here. More specific topics include stress as it relates to parents fighting, personal relationships, test anxiety, and sports stressors. Suggestions are offered for places to go for help online and in one's community, as well as music-relaxation ideas and journaling topics. The chapters are brief but informative, and the list of community-help organizations is exhaustive. Report writers will find information quickly and easily, as will those who have personal concerns. The print is clear and the format is readable, making this an accessible resource for struggling readers and researchers.-Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI
