This book was the result of speaking with a majority of the players on that team, and it marks the 10-year anniversary of the ordeal that the Providence College athletes went through on the field and off the field when they learned that their sport had been cut. They collectively put aside all their emotions and anger and went out and had the best season in the 80-year history of the school’s baseball program, winning the Big East Championship and getting into the NCAA Division I Tournament with a lot more to prove. It’s a sports story, but it is also an inspirational story about team work and achieving something when everyone else writes you off.

Eighty years of baseball at Providence College was gone just like that. I knew it would be an interesting book to local sports fans, anyone with a love of the sport, really. But I also realized that this book would become part of local history, so I wanted to be as accurate as possible. That’s the reason I covered the entire season, all the game summaries included. I would describe Strike IX as a narrative scrapbook, something that the players and avid fans could keep as a memento or souvenir of the 1999 championship season the Friars had that final year of baseball at Providence College.

Meet the Author

Paul Lonardo has had short fiction, book length fiction and non-fiction books published. Most recently he has co-authored a true crime book with Jeannie McDonough. Caught in the Act, a Courageous Family’s Fight to Save Their Daughter from a Serial Killer, was released by Berkley Books in March, 2011.
A previous true crime title that Paul co-authored was Thrill Killers, A True Story of Innocence and Murder Without Conscience (New Horizon Press, November 2007 / Berkley True Crime paperback, November 2008), a collaboration with the lead detective who investigated the double homicide chronicled in the book.
Paul also collaborated with Gina Russo on From The Ashes, Surviving the Station Nightclub Fire (Infinity, January 2010). The personal memoir and reflections of a survivor of the 2003 Rhode Island fire disaster that claimed the lives of 100 people is the subject of this book.

His early novels, The Apostate, Monstrosity, out of print for several years, are both now available in e-book format.

Paul attended Columbia College, a film school in Hollywood, CA and studied screenwriting. He received an A.S from Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA and received a B.A. in English from the University of Rhode Island.
Paul lives in Lincoln, RI with his wife and son.
