Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Stripe is a tiger cub who is as curious as any cat you've ever met! Mom and Dad Tiger have warned him--NEVER go into the jungle alone. But one hot summer day, while his parents take a nap, Stripe just can't resist wandering into the cool jungle on his own. Young readers will enjoy following Stripe's exciting adventures as he discovers that the jungle can sometimes be a scary place. Luckily, the curious tiger cub is also brave and clever and eventually comes up with a plan to find his way safely home. Stripe's escapades are daring enough to be fun but the fantasy's 'danger' is softened with a gentle good humor throughout. The lively language used in the text is action-oriented and rhythmic, making this hardcover picture book a read-aloud treat. The full color illustrations are equally bouncy and bright. Sure to become a bedtime or story hour favorite! 2000, Carolrhoda Books, Ages 2 to 8, $14.95. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

PreS-Gr 1-Stripe's parents warn him not to go into the jungle alone, but when they fall asleep, the little tiger sneaks off for an unforgettable adventure. First he is chased by a swarm of angry bees. Then he is almost eaten by hungry crocodiles that run him out to sea. Just when he thinks he is safe inside a cave, he realizes he is inside the mouth of a whale. Scared and cold, he thinks of a way to escape: he tickles the roof of the creature's mouth with his tail and the resulting sneeze propels him into the air and back home where his parent's are just awakening. Stripe's curiosity about the jungle is more than satisfied and he is happy not to return for a long time. Partis's artwork is colorful and textured with interesting brush strokes and batiklike patterns. A good choice for novice armchair adventurers.-Elizabeth O'Brien, Queens Borough Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
