Overview

Lee Greenwood's music has recently come back into vogue, after he touched a post-9/11 nerve with his anthem "God Bless the USA," which is included here in a booming version that features the extraordinary Fisk Jubilee Singers adding soaring gospel testimony. But Greenwood has more than flag waving on his mind on Stronger than Time. The dozen musings here are mostly about love, but largely of the lilting, introspective variety. "Love Is Stronger than Time," for example, does build to boisterous choruses, yet the gospel organ, piano, and discreet electric guitar filigrees set the tone for a philosophical treatise on the enduring strength of love. The similarly themed "One Life to Love" has a bit of a harder edge, thanks to the pounding drums and pungent electric guitar leads, and Greenwood delivers the vocal goods in a scratchy, bluesy voice loaded with credible urgency. Over a cooing, silky chorus and blues-tinged arrangement, he imparts some bemused observations about the uncharacteristic but celebratory behavior that can ensue "When a Woman's in Love." Breaking away from the main theme for a bit, Greenwood offers a well-observed tale of small-town values and good-hearted folks in a rustic, pop-country ballad, "'Round Here," and in "Rocks That You Can't Move," a quiet, stripped-down arrangement sets the mise en scene for a captivating tale of an elderly black sharecropper who has seen the best and the worst that life can offer. A good mix of songs rendered with commitment and feeling will remind listeners that Greenwood has a lot more going for him than just his patriotism.
