Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Amazing color photographs show the different animals known for their strengths and for their weaknesses. Different chapters provide clues to the different types of strength in animals. Some animals have strong, muscular bodies. In the photo, a cougar is in mid-air ready to pounce on its prey; the huge paws show the power of this cat. Big does not necessarily mean more strength. The peacock mantis shrimp is no pushover; the caption by its picture describes how its forelegs can punch out its prey. There are insets with additional information about the records that some of the animals hold, like the strongest bear or the weakest baby animal; however, children may need to infer what the strength is with some of the record titles like largest mud-wallowing or number one town-dweller. Another set of insets, with a picture of a tape measure, shows the actual size of some of the animals such as the dwarf goby and the pink fairy armadillo. Boldface words in the main text are located in the glossary. Children looking for information about a specific animal will find the index helpful. Located at the end of the book, there is a list of some activities to try. This book is part of the "Animal Opposite" series which examines other fascinating traits of different animals.
