Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Sue Preissner
This story varies from what many know as the traditional Jack/Beanstalk tale in that it incorporates in it the previous history between Jack's family and the Giant with which you may be unfamiliar. In this version, the wise cat, Octavia, helps Jack to kill the giant, gain fortune, and rescue his true love, Elinor. Oil painting was the medium used to convey this text; the bold lines and rich hues bring this medieval tale to life. The author encourages you to use this book as a read-aloud, having children act out the character roles. In using the name Strongheart Jack, he hopes to bring the children into discussion of the human character. From the August House "LittleFolk" Series.
