Editorial Reviews

Melinda Helfer
In the next exciting chapter in The Shaolan Alliance, Stronghold Rising, Kusac struggles to overcome his ordeal as a Valtegan prisoner and recover his mental powers. Although grateful to be reunited with his Triad, he remains haunted by his experience, especially knowing that Shaolin cubs are still being held by his old enemy. And now he must risk everything else he holds dear. Although it is sometimes difficult to keep track of what is now a huge cast of characters, not to mention an extremely convoluted plot, Lisanne Norman has crafted another unforgettable adventure in which imagination and emotional intensity are inextricably intertwined.
Romantic Times
Locus
This is a fun escapist fare, entertaining.

    Excellent sf

Begun in 1993 with Turning Point, Lisanne Norman's Sholan Alliance series of novels consists of the Turning Point, Fortune's Wheel, Fire Margins, Razor's Edge and Dark Nadir. Stronghold Rising is the sixth book in the series.
The heroes of Ms. Norman's books, the felinoid aliens called Sholans, are fascinatingly anthropomorphic, and compellingly heroic. The Primes are the highest ranking class of Valtegans, a warrior race who will fight anyone and anything in its path. The Primes are pacifist, but not without deviousness. For their own protection, they have been making secret alliances. Kusac and Carrie, the hero and heroine of the Sholan Alliance novels, have been kidnapped. This, as well as muscle-flexing between Shola and the Valytegan world, has created a rift in the already delicate negotiations. Kusac must overcome wounds he received at the hand of the supposedly pacifist Primes, in order to avert a war of universal proportions. What Kusac discovers could alienate him from his own people, and either save, or destroy his entire universe.
Although Carrie is convinced of Kusac's innocence, it appears the rest of the Sholans fear that he has turned traitor. As seems usual for Ms. Norma, she provides a rich and compelling story, while holding back just enough information to make the reader clamor for more. So it is with Stronghold Rising. If you haven't read the previous novels, you might be well-served to start at the beginning, to experience the full impact of Ms. Norman's talent for world- and race- building.
Reviewed by Rickey R.
