He has lectured and published extensively on design for earthquake safety and tensile structures, including at AIA National Conventions. Dr. Schierle holds PhD and Master of Architecture degrees from UC Berkeley and a Dipl-Ing degree from Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences. He teaches structures and design at USC and has also taught at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Stanford. He has served on the California structure license committee, the Journal for Architectural Education Editorial Board, and Fabric Architecture advisory board and annual awards jury. His professional practice includes major projects in America, Asia, and Europe.

This book is an incredible resource, written by an architectural and structural genius! It represents half a century of research, documenting & explaining innovative structures, and teaching architects about structures and synergy of art and science. What I like is that this is a book about structures written for architects by an architect-not an engineer. It's not filled with complex equations and calculations. It's filled with concepts, with pictures that explain the way complex structures and building work, with precedent studies, and with examples that show how easy it is to get a surprisingly accurate structural estimate with a few easy equations and rules of thumb. I amazed my first boss by being able to tell him instantly how big all of the structural members would need to be.just by using Goetz's 10-20-30 rule. I won a structural engineer's respect by knowing what Young's modulus was. After that, I was entrusted with projects and responsibilities well beyond my age. It does take a little bit of time to become acquainted with the book, and I wish there were an index of projects and topics in the back for quick reference. And I wish it were hardbound. But when you realize the value of the content, you won't complain. I had the privilege of learning from Goetz as a student in his Architectural Structures courses at the University of Southern California. I've had the honor of learning from many world-renowned architects and professors at USC and Harvard-but none has impacted my life and work as much as Goetz. Every architecture student asks why they have to learn structures. Isn't that the engineer's job? What Goetz taught us-and what his book teaches-is that if you want to create truly exceptional and revolutionary architecture, you have to know how things work and understand the basic structural principles. Knowing this empowers you to dream big, to break barriers and invent new things. This has proven true in my experience. I got a 10- to 15-year head start in my own architectural practice because I could dream big and know enough about the practical things (structures, material, construction methods, costs, etc.) to get it done. By the age of 22 I had my own practice and completed my first internationally-published work; by 23 I had my first multi-million dollar project commission. So much of what I know and what I can do is because of what Goetz taught me. You may never have the opportunity to learn from him in person, but you can get his book-which is compiled from his lesson plans he developed over 30+ years of teaching and traveling.
