    Great reference!

Great text, explains everything in detail. The practice programs are good reference tools for writing your own programs.

The best programming/computer book I've yet read.

Out of the three computer courses I have taken lately, this is the only text that was not horrible. It was even excellent. The book anticipates what the reader needs to know and explains it with nearly perfect succinctness--not too much or too little explanation. The book is definitely written for the beginning programmer and, I feel, really strips you of such a moniker. I wouldn't say that about too many texts I've read about computers/programming. I have, however, had the luxury of taking a course in COBOL using this book; using the text alone to learn the subject may be a bit more of a challenge. But I would think that, without the classroom experience too, my opinion would remain the same. The class in which I'm learning COBOL was billed as an introduction to programming. I would have been very displeased that I was learning COBOL if the text was poorly written, confusing, or the like. But the good text makes me more happy that I happen to be learning a somewhat 'out of date' programming language.

    Magnifico!!

I am a college senior at an accredited business school in Baltimore, Md. My course in COBOL was a breeze with this book. It really helped with some of the tough stuff like file processing.
