Gr 6–9—From the foreword by model Coco Rocha to the assertion that America's and Canada's Next Top Model reality series is mainly "entertainment," an industry veteran offers readers a more realistic view of high-fashion modeling. While there's no denying that top models can earn big bucks, Beker reminds readers that for each Linda Evangelista, Tyra Banks, and Gisele Bündchen there are hundreds of hopefuls who never become household names. She is also quick to point out that the work can be glamorous but for the top models it is also a game of genes and tremendously hard work. Biographical sketches and black-and-white photographs appear throughout. Excellent, age-appropriate information for readers with a passion for fashion in a well-designed format.—Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta

VOYA - Donna Miller
Beker has created a high-interest, informative read for young women who aspire to work as models in the high-fashion world. Beker presents a realistic picture of the competitive nature of modeling and the hard work necessary to succeed. The book contains a wealth of information, including many aspects of both the positives and negatives of this difficult but rewarding career. In addition to a brief historical overview, practical tips and suggestions are provided. Also addressed are the many characteristics, besides just beauty, that successful models must possess or develop. In the author's favor, models are not simply presented as lovely objects for all to admire but as intelligent, strong, unique, hard-working, talented individuals whose strength and perseverance have helped them rise to the top in this challenging profession. High-interest features include numerous photographs of well-known models and boxed profiles. Included in the profiles is such information as birth date, country of origin, agency for which each model works, how they were discovered, career highlights, and more. This book will serve as a useful primer for those who are passionate and commited to entering the difficult and sometimes stressful world of today's glamorous models. Reviewer: Donna Miller
Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Many young girls dream of being rich and famous. The media is full of beautiful, successful women and it is only natural for young girls to imagine themselves living the dream life as a supermodel or movie star. The reality of that life, however, can be very different. Beker offers a tantalizing look at the life behind the scenes of professional models, focusing on the hard work and rare opportunities that arise for models just starting in the industry. The author also takes care to point out the dangers that young women face when they enter a world completely different from the world they grew up in. Beker focuses on the career opportunities and pitfalls of female models and only briefly mentions the possibilities available to young men in the modeling industry. The text is peppered with stories of supermodels that came from humble beginnings and struck gold and at times seems to only offer a false sense of what young girls can expect upon entering the business. Black and white photos, along with brief biographies and professional statistics of famous models, also appear throughout the text. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
