Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Mr. Moe has a head as bald as an egg; he is as tall as a giraffe; and he is as thin as a rail. As Mr. Moe continues through his day, he polishes his shoes until they shine like a new penny and puts on his hat which fits like a glove. All of the similes are explained in inset boxes and other shapes. The humorous illustrations contribute to understanding through emphasizing the comparison of the two objects or by showing what the simile would look like if taken literally. When Mr. Moe waits in a line moving at a snail's pace, the people around him are shown with bodies in the shapes of snails with human heads attached. Mr. Moe finally arrives at a crowded restaurant and hears a voice that is music to his ears. His granddaughter is calling from a booth across the room. He joins her, feeling as happy as a lark. An activity page near the end invites readers to develop their own similes. Includes a bibliography and an index. A fun introduction to these figures of speech. Part of the "Ways to Say It" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
