Stuck on A.M.: Off the Record in Minneapolis

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Bryan Carroll

Taking its name from Rex Daisy's signature song "Stuck on AM," the double-CD set features 33 songs that were all recorded and simultaneously broadcast live in the station's on-air soundproofed studio (affectionately known as Studio K) during the local music show, Off the Record. The album cuts a representative slice out of the mid-'90s Minneapolis rock scene; virtually any Twin Cities band worth their tube amps had played live on Radio K, and the 33 artists here represent the best of that era. Three years into Radio K's reign as "Best Radio Station...ver?," the ambitious kids that staffed the student-run A.M. station put together this sprawling gem of a compilation. The self-taught engineers used the same soundboard and mixing methods for every band that went into the studio, giving the album, which could have been a sonic and stylistic mess, a cohesive feel; naturally, some songs come off better than others, but, all in all, the collection is remarkably solid. What's more, all of the proceeds from the sale of the discs went straight into the Kristin Pfaff Memorial Scholarship Fund (Pfaff played bass in the bands Janitor Joe and Hole, before dying tragically in 1994 of an apparent heroin overdose). Humorous but with a strong sense of purpose and community, Stuck on A.M. is a testament not only to KUOM's lasting importance in the Twin Cities rock underground, but also to the wealth, diversity, and quality of Minnesota music.
