Overview

Illustrating that there is a spot for everyone, this recruitment manual is a go-to guide for all high school students that dream of participating in college athletics. It addresses not only how to get recruited by top colleges and universities but also how to excel academically in both high school and college to ensure a successful career as a student-athlete. Offering insider information, this guidebook for getting scholarship money also provides tips for understanding the complicated NCAA recruiting rules, information on what colleges really want from athletes in their programs, and techniques for developing individual skills to transition successfully from high school to college athletics. The rules and regulations for NCAA recruitment have been entirely revised and updated. Candid and insightful input from college athletics experts, college and high school counselors, and athletic trainers helps sportspersons achieve success in many areas of their life—including training, nutrition, and time management—catapulting these students beyond their peers both on and off the field.

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
The subtitle says it all. Brown, an award-winning high school and former college soccer coach, offers a comprehensive plan for winning athletic scholarships and becoming a college athlete. Lists, sidebars and the use of many student examples help make the wealth of information he provides about the often-confusing recruitment process more appealing and more manageable. Chapters address such topics as the NCAA rules, financial aid and admission standards, college visits, transitioning to college, first-year challenges and pitfalls to beware of, and scheduling issues. Brown also includes interviews with college coaches about what they're really looking for, along with advice from strength and conditioning experts and sports nutrition and athletic trainers to help students prepare. Student athletes, along with their parents and coaches, will certainly want to consult this detailed, knowledgeable guide. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick
School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up

In this nuts-and-bolts guide, Brown offers candid advice about a very competitive process that focuses as much on eligibility (academics) as on athletic prowess. Coaches Debbie Southern (Furman University), John Cossaboon (Gonzaga University), and others tell readers what they look for in a student athlete. Citing passion for the game, ability to balance academics with sports, and willingness to learn, it is clear that athleticism is only part of the equation. The prospective student-athlete (PSA) will find NCAA timelines and visiting rules (which vary by division), scholarships by sport, and more. Chapters contain an outlined narrative in which bulleted information, charts and tables, and glossaries are integrated. Real-life successes and mix-ups appear throughout, including that of "Liz," a field hockey player who was dropped from recruitment because her email address contained her birth date, "420," a popular drug reference. Not limited to the recruitment process, the final chapters offer team rules and general college advice.-Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY
