Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer:Marilyn Sample, B.S. and M.S.(Indiana State University)
Description:This psychiatric nursing textbook integrates several models to present mental health theory reflecting a continuum of health throughout the life span.
Purpose:The purpose is to "help students integrate concepts of holistic nursing, adaptation, and human responses across the life span." Few authors organize content around the life span model. This book provides a unique approach to the presentation of theory and the authors satisfactorily accomplish the objectives that are outlined in the preface.
Audience:This book is an appropriate resource for nursing students studying mental health nursing. The authors possess credible credentials and experience.
Features:The book presents theoretical concepts foundational to caring for a population with mental health needs. There are several unique features. "In the new" provides information from the news/current events that enhance learning. "Research abstract" provides relevant scientific information for each chapter. "My experience" provides information about a client's experience concerning a mental health need. There is a chapter devoted to psychosocial care in a medical-surgical setting which is uncommon in many other mental health nursing texts. The material is well-organized, and the format incorporates the use of a variety of color which is stimulating.
Assessment:This textbook comprehensively presents theoretical, scientific, and experiential information while blending it with the nursing process. It is a useful resource and text.
