Overview

The World Wide Web is expanding at a rapid pace. This progressive growth has inevitably created a proliferation of sites and information sources that are posted on this medium. Jim Millhorn attempts to examine a small corner of this undergrowth in Student's Companion to the World Wide Web by focusing on outstanding academic and scholarly sites for students in the social sciences and humanities. While the Web is an invaluable source of information, students do not always know how to extract the information that they seek. This guide can offer assistance. This book expertly handles common reference sources, search engines, meta-subject guides, the humanities, and social science disciplines, which are arranged in an alphabetized sequence of chapters featuring each individual discipline. An innovative and timely answer to the student's quest for information, this book opens the broadest purview the Web offers on a specific discipline while simultaneously limiting the number of featured sites.

Editorial Reviews

Internet Reference Services Quarterly
This resource will be a valuable asset to any student doing research on the Web. It is highly recommended for academic and public libraries.
Orana
This is a well-written companion to the World Wide Web which I...confidently recommend.
Reference and Research Book News
Milhorn features 100 plus outstanding academic and scholarly sites for students in the social sciences and humanities arranged alphabetically by discipline.
From the Publisher
The result is a handbook that would be useful to students, instructors, and librarians for beginning research in the social sciences and humanities. One would hope that Mr. Millhorn, at this moment, is collecting equally outstanding Internet sites for a subsequent Student's Companion to resources in the sciences and technology.
VOYA - Voya Reviews
This outstanding title provides an annotated list of Web sites for twenty-one broad social sciences and humanities disciplines, which are further divided into ten to fifteen alphabetically arranged subdisciplines. The first half of the book alphabetically lists the social sciences fields of study from anthropology and archaeology to sociology, whereas the last half covers humanities resources from art to religion. The list of annotated Web sites for each discipline begins with a general site chosen for its comprehensiveness and superior organization. The remaining Web sites were chosen for information content, organization, and quality of scholarship. The superb annotations range in length from one to three paragraphs, with the URLs and alternative sites listed in bold type. Millhorn's intention is not to teach search strategies or skills, although he does provide a handy chapter summarizing the pros and cons of several search engines. A useful chapter of comprehensive reference sites is subdivided into reference tools such as encyclopedias, maps, and dictionaries. Black-and-white screenshots of the title graphics from each Web site are shown above each annotation. Millhorn recognizes the volatility of the Web and the danger of dead links. This book should be updated periodically to ensure its currency and to include new sites worthy of annotation. Suggestions for future editions are the inclusion of newer search tools, such as Google (http://www.google.com) and Fast Search (http://www.alltheweb.com), as well as an appendix with an alphabetical list of annotated Web sites and URLS. The table of contents is currently the only way to access a site, but an index would simplifyverifying a URL or checking a particular organization's Web site. A similar book on science and mathematics resources would be equally useful for any student. This excellent reference title contains resources for all ages and is a necessary purchase for all libraries. Illus. 1999, Scarecrow Press, Ages 12 to Adult, 104p, $18.50 Oversize pb.
